Home Healthcare
- Care is performed by medically licensed personnel (LPN’s, Nurses, Doctors, Therapists, and Medical Social Workers)
- This is usually following a hospitalization and lets the patient go home from the hospital sooner following an illness or major surgery.
- Most home healthcare workers come from agencies and the hospital social worker is usually a great resource or your physician’s office.
- Home Healthcare is much more expensive ($30 to $50 per hour) than home care but can also sometimes be covered by Medicare, Medicaid, private insurance or even Long-Term Care Insurance.
- Duties can include taking vitals, medication admin, wound care and lab draws.
Home Care
- Care is more custodial and examples can be helping the patient shower, the laundry of the patient, tidying up the patient’s room (not vacuuming the house).
- Some agencies exist but many people use friends, church and family members to help find the right person or two (always need a backup plan)
- Cost for home care is a lot less and duties can be negotiated.
Action Steps: When hiring either home healthcare employees or home care employees please do your research and background checks. There are many excellent people in both professions but there are also some horror stories so it’s a good time to do your homework.
Additional Information: Companion Care – There are sometimes situations that a senior who lives by themselves will be released from the hospital and can take care of themselves but will be homebound for a while. You can hire or find volunteers that come in daily or a few times a week to check in on them and read to them, play cards or just talk. “We can’t believe how much we received from the estate sale profits. We paid for Mom & Dad’s move to the senior living facility and added some $ to their savings which is great and the estate sale comapany did the work” I have heard this quote many times from seniors and their families after the estate sale process is over.

1. Reaching out to contacts that could sell antiques and valuable items before the estate sale. The Estate Sales people and collectors are usually a close knit group and know the other’s wants and needs.
2. Sorting through your items and determining what needs to go right to charity and what can sell.
3. Setting dates (usually a few weeks to a month later) and times. You will notice they are not garage sale times, they might schedule a Friday afternoon and a Saturday morning (but this depends on the area).
4. Grouping items and organizing them in your house (some but not many estate sales are handled in an independent space).
5. Protecting your carpet with plastic covering and have the house organized well before the sale.
6. Arriving ready for the sale with: itemized cash register, credit card machine and sometimes even a security guard for more high end sales.
