Dementia affects eight to ten million people in the US with the majority of those having Alzheimers Disease. It is a progressive disease that is under diagnosed and is the 6th leading cause of death in the US. Some figures have the US spending over 200 billion dollars per year with Medicare and Medicaid paying 70%. Women are more prevalent in developing dementia and some studies show that 50% of all 85 year old adults have or will get dementia. There are no current medications approved that stop the progression of the disease, they basically just try and treat the symptoms. Prevention of dementia is still very theoretical, but exercise and using your mind are always at the top of the list. One new theory is that learning a new language after age 65 will lower your chance immensely.
