Types of Insurance that Seniors Need
- Life Insurance – Besides spousal financial needs…seniors buy life insurance for various reasons (funeral expenses, small business tax reasons). Please beware of “sticker shock”, buying life insurance as a senior will cost you more than when you were younger (based on actuarial tables).
- Long term care insurance (see chapter in book)
- Property Insurance
- Rental Insurance – very important if you are renting in independent living
- Auto Insurance if applicable
- Travel Insurance (read golden nugget below)
- Annuities
- Medicare Advantage (see chapter in book)
- Medigap Plans (see chapter in book)
- Medicare Part D plans (see chapter in book)
Action Step: Please make sure you choose an insurance agent that is well versed with the senior products (Medigap, Medicare Advantage and Med Part D) because a real expertise is needed dealing with these products.
Additional Information: International Travel – Medicare does not pay for hospitals and doctors outside of the United States. Some Medigap & Medicare C plans have some coverage but you will need to ask or read the fine print. You can also buy “trip medical insurance” from a multitude of carriers through your insurance agent or online. In Minnesota you will need to choose the extended basic Medigap plan if you are interested in having your Medigap insurance cover foreign health costs.[/vc_column_text][/vc_column][/vc_row][vc_row][vc_column] [/vc_column][/vc_row]
